Topic:  Maintaining Resilient Code: Using Tools From Microsoft’s DevLabs and Research Sites

Recently, there’s been a number of tools that have been released on Microsoft’s DevLabs and Research sites to assist developers in writing industrial-strength code. In this session, we’ll look at three of them in detail - Code Contracts, Pex, CHESS - and see how they can find insidious bugs in your applications before your users do.

Topic:  ADO.NET Entity Framework Introduction and Overview

ADO.NET 3.5's Entity Framework presents us with several new options for accessing data within our application. EF can be used build applications against a conceptual model that is mapped to the logic data model. The goal of this session is to provide an overview of the components provided within the ADO.NET Entity Framework including EntityClient, Entity SQL, Object Services, the Entity Data Model, and LINQ to Entities. This session will explore these and other features and will provide several examples of how to properly apply this technology to your own development project.

Speaker:  Patrick Kragthorpe-Shirley

Topic:  Developing on Microsoft Windows 7

Building applications that are easy to use, visually appealing, and offer high performance is a challenge that developers face every day. Innovative applications can greatly improve the user experience, empowering companies to differentiate their services and solutions. However, developers are increasingly asked to do more in less time, while also optimizing the power and performance requirements of their applications. The Windows 7 platform makes it easy for developers to create engaging, user-friendly applications by providing familiar tools and rich development features that allow them to take advantage of the latest PC capabilities. In this session we will explore the new Taskbar and Jump Lists, the Scenic Ribbon, file management with Libraries, and Windows Web Services among many other enhancements to the new operating system.

Speaker:  Mike Benkovich

Energy, laughter and a contagious passion for coding - Mike brings it all to the podium. His career has taken him from minion to business owner, and he's been programming since the late '70s, when a friend brought a Commodore CPM home for the summer. He wrote his first software in Basic (including a math game that was shown at the University of Wisconsin in 1982) and later completed a degree in aerospace engineering. In 1994 he started a consulting firm with his brother, focusing on the effective use of relational technologies for scalable, high performance and mission critical applications. Mike has worked in a variety of roles including architect, project manager, developer and technical writer. The coolest part of his job? Running into people who are still using (and liking) his software applications. Mike is a published author with WROX Press and APress Books, writing primarily about getting the most from your SQL Server database. Since appearing in Microsoft's DevCast in 1994, Mike has presented technical information at seminars, conferences and corporate boardrooms across America. This music buff also plays piano, guitar and saxophone - but not at his MSDN Events. For more information visit Mike's website.

Topic:  Stop Coding and Start Generating

Did you know Visual Studio 2008 comes with a code generator? Well it does, and you should learn to use it so you can stop writing repetitive code (i.e. DTO's and DAL's) and generate it. Come to this session to learn about the Text Template Transformation Toolkit (T4). T4 allows you to use simple ASP.NET-like template syntax to generate application source code, configuration files, stored procedures and more. This session will give you all the information you need to start using T4 effectively in your project, TODAY! We will go from basics (such as T4 template syntax) to advanced topics (such as template design and use of T4 in large projects) stopping along the way to create several templates from scratch.
